Gerald, Sue and family and their guides welcome you to their New Zealand hunting operation in their corner of paradise – Wanaka, in the South Island
Gerald Telford established the Wanaka based Fishing & Hunting Services in October 1993. As an active angler and keen hunter for 42 years, Gerald decided to make a career move away from the agriculture industry to set up a professional guiding service.
He thrives on passing on the skills of years of hands-on experience to other anglers and hunters and his extensive local knowledge and contacts ensures a wide range of options are available.
Recent highlights for him have been bow hunting trips to Namibia and Alaska and his passion for the outdoors, conservation and philosophy of a free range, fair game hunt, motivates him to provide an unmatched level of service and expertise in the field.
He is also strongly involved in the guiding industry as a Hunt Facilitator for the NZ Deerstalkers Association and a member and past president of The New Zealand Professional Hunting Guides Association (NZPHGA) and a member of The New Zealand Professional Fishing Guides Association (NZPFGA).
Emphasis is on quality matched with a personally tailored experience with regards to both the service provided and the game trophies that our clients may wish to pursue.
Outfitter Gerald Telford is fully licensed as a hunting and fishing guide in accordance with New Zealand regulations.
NZ Mountain Safety Council Outdoor First Aid and hunts course facilitator who promotes best practice in all aspects of his hunting and guiding operation.
Member and past executive member of The New Zealand Professional Fishing Guides Association (NZPFGA). This national body aims to foster a high quality approach to guiding. Members must meet strict standards of experience and professionalism to be accepted.
Member of the Safari Club International and the SCI New Zealand Chapter whose aim is to conserve the hunting experience throughout New Zealand and the world.
Served on the Executive of the New Zealand Professional Hunting Guides Association (NZPHGA). Gerald is past president of the NZPHGA with a term from 2012 to 2015. This national body aims to foster a high quality approach to guiding. Members must meet strict standards of experience and professionalism to be accepted.

Gerald has Department of Conservation (DOC) concession permits to operate on public lands and other special land areas. We also have good relations with local landowners and have access to some exceptional hunting areas.
Sue Kronfeld married me near on 30 years ago, I gave her fair warning on what she was letting herself in for and she still went ahead and married me. I’m figuring I got the better deal. Sue is “that” person who does all the stuff that no one gets to notice (except me). Sue puts the travel itineraries together, does the accounts and budgets, and sorts the technology.
Thanks Sue and don’t stop now, your job is always here and never finishes.
Along the way we have raised two daughters into adulthood.
Sue’s happy place is in the air, but her feet are firmly planted on the ground despite having her head in the clouds most of the time, all part and parcel of a General Aviation (GA) pilot with over 7000 logged hours. If Sue isn’t flying for work, it takes no persuasion to roll the Murphy Super Rebel out from his hanger and head off for an adventure somewhere in NZ’s backcountry, Sue flies, I watch for game and likely fishing spots. Thanks Sue.
Duncan Stewart is my head guide. Duncan and I spend three to four months ever year living in each other’s pockets then take a break for eight months and do it all again. When it’s hunting season (March to June) we are a well-tuned team, we know each other, respect each other and can agree to disagree with each other, we often don’t need to say anything, things just happen.
I’m maybe 25 years his senior but when it comes to hunting and results, I know who the better man is, it’s not me. I once had experience on my side but after 20 years of working together I’m happy to forfeit that advantage.
To our clients, hunters and friends, Duncan is the guy you need to listen to. His fitness and strength aren’t his only assets. His ability to see a stag once and immediately recognise it an hour, a day, a week later never fail to surprise me.
There isn’t much about our hunting area (Mt Maude) that he hasn’t figured out, be it wind, weather, game trails, seasonal variations, he is very good at what he does and is fun to be out hunting with.
He is also very handy with a camera.
Ruth has grown up in a hunting outfitting family, following her father around since the age of 4 and knows no different. She is an upbeat, passionate young hunter with great enthusiasm. She loves the peace and tranquillity that the outdoors provides.
